Our thermal coal business has operations in South Africa and Colombia.

South Africa

In South Africa we own and operate nine thermal coal mines and have a 50% interest in the Mafube colliery and Phola washing plant. Six of these mines supply thermal coal to both export and local markets, New Vaal, New Denmark and Kriel collieries supply coal to Eskom, the local power utility. Isibonelo colliery supplies coal to Sasol Synfuels, a local synthetic fuels producer on a fixed price contract basis. We have a 24% share in the Richards Bay Coal Terminal and a 73% stake in Anglo American Inyosi Coal (AAIC), a broad-based black economic empowerment company who hold Kriel colliery and the new Zibulo multi-product mine.
