Australia is home to our Metallurgical Coal business. With top class assets and coal resources of well over three billion tonnes, we are in a strong position to capitalise on the demand for coking coal in the burgeoning Asia Pacific markets.
In March 2011, we announced delivery of first metal at our Barro Alto nickel operation in Brazil. The project was the first of our four major strategic growth projects to begin production and will be a key contributor to our planned 35% volume growth by 2014.
Anglo American opened its first Brazilian office in Rio de Janeiro, in 1973. The country is home to two of our business units – Iron Ore Brazil and Nickel – and our major growth project – Minas-Rio – and continues to be a significant area of expansion.
Anglo American has been operating in Chile since 1980 and the country is home to our Copper business. With six operations in production and significant growth expected through the expansion of our Los Bronces mine, Chile is one of our key strategic host countries.
De Beers is the world’s leading diamond company. It generates about 35%, by value, of global rough diamond production from operations in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Canada, and has unrivalled diamond distribution, sales and marketing operations.
Greenfield project Grosvenor forms a major part of Anglo American’s strategy to triple metallurgical coal production from our Australian assets by 2020.
Our Kolomela mine is a key element of our South African iron ore growth strategy. The successful commissioning of Kolomela was the third of our major growth projects to be delivered in 2011.
Our Los Bronces copper expansion in Chile is one of our major strategic growth projects. First production from the expansion project was achieved on schedule in Q4 2011.
Minas-Rio is one of our four major strategic growth projects. As part of our Iron Ore Brazil portfolio, the Minas-Rio project is a Tier One asset and is expected to significantly enhance Anglo American’s position in the highly attractive global seaborne iron ore market.
Anglo American was founded in South Africa in 1917 and the country remains of key strategic importance, with operations in four of our core commodities.
